Jordan Parliament Repeals ‘Marry the Rapist’ Clause

In a major victory for moderates and women, the kingdom of Jordan on Tuesday voted to drop a controversial provision in its penal code that enabled a rapist to evade punishment if he married his victim.

Following an emotional debate, legislators in the nation’s parliament voted narrowly to drop the clause, known as Article 308.
