“May also play a role”? IMAGES MENA and the BBC shouldn’t kid themselves. The “general climate” of devoutness in Islam (which the BBC tries to hide by calling “religious conservatism”) is what subjugates and brutalizes women all over the Middle East. If you have a religion that sanctions wife-beating, polygamy, the reduction of a woman’s inheritance rights, the reduction of the value of a woman’s testimony, honor killing, female genital mutilation, and the covering of women in the cloth coffins of the burqa and niqab, you’re going to get men who think women are unequal to them. This isn’t rocket science. It’s Islam.

Only one in four men in the Arab region supports equality for women in some areas, and most still believe a woman’s primary role is at home, a survey suggests.
Interviews in Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and the Palestinian territories also found that younger men mostly appeared to be as conservative as their fathers.
But men in the region are said to face “tremendous stress” to be providers.
This was especially true in places affected by conflict, the report says.
